Tumor of the Major Salivary Glands

Abstract
During past 5 years and 7 months period from Jan. 1968 to Jul. 1973, 20 cases of major salivary
gland tumors were treated at Department of Surgery, Medical school, Chonnam University. Clinical analysis of these tumors were carried out and the results were summarized as follows 1. The incidence of major salivary glands was 0.0113 per cent of all patients entered to " Chonnam University Hospital.
2. Male was 12 cases (60% and female was 8 cases (40%).
3. In age distribution the highest was 73 years and the lowest was 11 years, average age was 40 years.
4. In the localization of the tumors, 16 cases (76. 2%) were on the parotid gland being the most common site, 4 cases on the submaxillary gland, 1 case on the subliugual gland. 5. The commonest clinical manifestation is palpable mass.
6. The consistence of tumors was moderate hard(45%) and stony hard (35%).
7. The histopathology in all benign tumors were mixed tumor. The malignant tumors were; mucoepidermoid 3 cases, malignant mixed tumor 2 cases, cylindromatous adenocystic carcinoma is 1 case.
8. All benign tumors were treated by surgery except 1 case, but half of the 6 malignant tumors were resectable.
9. In 4 cases of 6 malignant tumors were metastased to regional lymph node 2, lung 1, and tonsil 1 case.
10. There was 3 recurrent cases of 13 benign tumors and 1 case of 3 malignant tumors treated by surgery.
